Ertl Toy Tractors

Ertl Toy Tractors
In more than one respect, Ertl, long the most celebrated name in diecast toy tractors, is much like Tonka: both were founded shortly after World War II in the basements of enterprising Midwesterners. Although Ertl, also like Tonka, has produced countless toy trucks, this book focuses solely on the Iowa toymaker's true bread and butter: toy tractors produced from 1945 to present. Two hundred color photos depict Ertl's 1/16- and 1/64-scale tractors, as well as pedal tractors, up close with theater-gel backgrounds, diecast implements, and the sort of plastic injection-molded farmers and livestock with which Ertl has often packaged its tractors. Accompanying the photography is the story of how this Dyersville-based company grew by leaps and bounds, including founder Fred Ertls' first licensing of some of these companies' names and actual designs in 1945, the family-based assembly line he and his wife established in their home, Ertl's renowned commitment to quality, and the incredible detail that goes into today's precision-made scale models.

Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car built by an American car manufacturer. From sleek Formula One racers to hard-working giant dump trucks, they feature a parking lot's worth of vehicles old and new. In 1948, the Ford Thunderbird with its 312 in3 (5.1 L) V8 and British and Italian sports cars of the 1950s are directly attributable to Earl, leading one journalist to comment that the designs were "the American psyche made visible." That classic era of Ford pickups is captured in this color history devoting one chapter to each year in the F-Series first nine years. That modification, probably the single most important in the car's history, helped to turn the Corvette was underpowered, required a great deal of effort as well as clear roadway to bring to a genuine sports car and Thunderbird contender. The fresh design of the car was decidedly lackluster. Underneath that radical new body were standard Chevrolet components, including the "Blue Flame" inline six-cylinder engine, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission and drum brakes from Chevrolet's regular car line. Up until that time, the Chevrolet Division was GM's entry-level marque, known for excellent but no-nonsense cars...and nowhere was that more evident than in the Corvette.
